Out of curiosity is 'Alan Wake' good? I was never one for a pseudo survival-horror, or in a fanboys' words "A psychological action thriller."

You won't like it. I have only played a couple of hours, as I got distracted with Ninja Gaiden II, so i can't get too specific, but I wasn't even all that impressed, and I thought I would be. The way the narrative plays out is fantastic, and the narrative itself is very good, at least thus far, but the action is already derivative.

I try to remain pessimistic about the gaming industry to avoid the inevitable disappointment they seem to be drip-feeding us, especially 'Valve'. Colossal frustration to be found there..

The Last Story
It's shaping up rather nicely. It's ironic that the home console this gen that has the best jRPGs is the Wii, although I am having fun with some old school jRPG action in the latest Star Ocean installment. It's probably the only jRPG I've enjoyed playing on one of the other two major systems. Excluding Valkyria Chronicles for being a TBS/RPG that also kicked ass.
Edit: Oooh! Square announced a cooperation with Obsidian to make Dungeon Siege III! Guess Alpha Protocol caught their eye? Obsidian could probably work wonders with that franchise.

Did you try Resonance of Fate?
Also, a question regarding Star Ocean 4: Is the movement all fucked up? I purchased 3 for the PS2 in a bargain bin and had to stop playing after ten-fifteen minutes because the character movement was driving me batshit crazy. I'm not usually so picky, and I am great at ignoring flaws if the core experience is good or redeemable in any way, but with that game I couldn't even get to experience what it may have had to offer because moving around was so fucking awkward. It's been a long time, and it was a brief experience, so I cannot recall the specifics, and perhaps I need to try it again, but I remember being really, really put off, and immediately as well.

Resonance is pretty good. I'd say really good actually. Quite flashy! Still, you should prepared for a Heroes of Might and Magic type of battleground for the battles.
I'm a little disappointed about the world map roaming, but I don't think it's a critical flaw or anything.
In other news, I've been reading up on Dungeon Siege III, Obsidian's next project. It had a closed doors showing in E3 this year and articles keep saying how awesome this Obsidian game looks, even though it's still in Pre-Alpha. In case you didn't catch this, we're talking an Obsidian game that looks great on the visuals department and still in Pre-Alpha. I am not sure how this came to be.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope worked just fine for me. A very back to basics jRPG. It's good and it doesn't stray from the formula that made jRPGs so awesome in the 90s. Definitely worth a rent to check it out. I encountered no problems with the movement. My only problem was not realizing that I could level up my special attacks. So I grinded my chars to lvl 10 just to get through the first boss. Hey, the last SO game I played was EX on the PS1! Sue me!

Has Dragon Quest IX come out already in NA? Cause over here in Europe I've got to wait till Friday before I can buy it.. And I'm interested to see what you guys think of it. Gametrailers gave it a positive review, but they also gave Alpha Protocol a negative one so right now I'm a little unsure about their reviewing credibility, or at least how similar my thoughts on a game will be.

It plays like the typical JRPG and similar to previous DragonQuest games. The thing is that it lacks conversations between characters since it's mostly meant to be played co-op =(
I really liked having a romance in DQ ... 4 was it? Or was it 6? Where I chose between 3 potential wives and started my own family. Pretty awesome. I trust the DQ franchise far more than Final Fantasy. That and the Tales Of series make for the best JRPG experiences this gen.

So there's no character development or interaction? That's a shame, and for some reason my DS won't connect to my internet so it lacks any internet connection making co-op play impossible.
How is it for a single-player experience? I'm not that picky with story and characters. As long as there's a somewhat decent story and some conversation between the protagonist and NPCs I'll be satisfied.
