I know, I know, it is still out there...it's just harder to find, but this isn't really the main purpose of this blog.
Since you're on a gaming website, you likely know enough about games to know about the cult games, the cult developers, the cult icons, etc.
No, this blog is more of a rant at would really should be out there, what is so obvious that it shouldn't come down to some random Journalist on a games site to be ranting about it.
I'm going to try and avoid the "because it'd be cool" mentality, and give explanations as to why these things should exist, but feel free to correct me or make comment on the ideas.
Handheld Connectivity
We all know that the handheld consoles can connect up to the main consoles. Nintendo have used it for Pokemon trading and transfer, and the ccasional developer has utilised this function for the PSP (if I remember correctly, Tomb Raider: Underworld could be played on the PS3, then transfer to the PSP, and then back again to the PS3, so you could play the full game on the move).
But to what end?
Trading a few creatures is nifty, and some of the PSP connections have been interesting...but lets face it, these things are forgettable and un-original.
So here's my idea.
Maps, Files, and Item Management. All 3 things are important aspects of most games in the console market.
Imagine connecting your DS to your Wii whilst playing Silent Hill: Shattered memories. The top screen displays the map of the location you're in, whilst the bottom screen allows you to flick through photographs and files, and can also be used to make notes on your map. To top it off, it could even become useful for solving a few riddles that unlock some bonus content (hidden files, etc).
This would be fairly easy for them to do, considering Nintendo did it with Zelda: Wind Waker and the GBA SP.
I can understand that it'd cost more money and take more time to put into the game (considering not everyone would have a DS), but with the modern obsession with adding innovation to games, and trying to get more people to feel immersed in the universes created by the developers, it makes sense to add these little extras that enance gameplay aspects.
Not to mention how streamlined the HUD would become for games if everything was transfered to something off-screen.
This sort of system would work with all sorts of titles. Both PSP and DS can handle basic information such as Maps, Files, Item systems, and a lot of other things.
Objectives could be stuck up on the screens of the handhelds, Video-messages from other characters could be played on screen whilst you're doing other things (The Janitor from Dead Rising, Joker from Mass Effect, Roman from GTA4) without breaking the main gameplay, and your rear view mirror could be shown in the screens (something I saw in a video once for a driving game, that I thought would be utilised in future titles like the GTA games).
I'm even shocked that the PSP connectivity isn't utilised by Playstation Home, given that Sony are trying their hardest to push new ideas within the virtual space.
Anyway, that's one of my rants/ideas.
